Hard Water and Phoenix Fixture Life
Understanding how hard water affects fixtures helps set realistic maintenance expectations. At 10–25 gpg:
Aerators (the screen on faucet tips): clean every 1–3 months in hard water. Easy DIY — unscrew, soak in vinegar for 30 minutes, reinstall. Replacing rather than cleaning is unnecessary waste.
Cartridges (the internal valve controlling flow and temperature): expect 3–5 year life in Phoenix without a softener, vs. 8–10 years with treated water. Signs of failure: dripping when off, hard to turn, hot/cold mixing issues.
Showerheads: disassemble and soak annually, or replace every 2–3 years in hard water. High-end showerheads with rubber nozzles (Moen, Waterpik Rain) shed scale more easily than metal nozzle types.
